A recent study published in Journal of the American Society of Hypertension investigated the association between interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), IL-1β, and aortic stiffness in end-stage renal disease patients. This cross-sectional study recruited 351 patients on dialysis. The findings showed that diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mean blood pressure (MBP), and IL-6 remained associated with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV). Meanwhile, the impact of age, diabetes, and CVD on cf-PWV was partially mediated by IL-6. No associations could be elicited between TNF, IL-1β, and aortic stiffness. Whereas IL-6 was associated with augmentation index and central pulse pressure, when adjusted for MBP and heart rate. However, this relationship was not significant after adjusting for potential confounders. Thus, the results of this study hinted at a potential role of IL-6 for chronic kidney disease-related aortic stiffness.
